THUNDER BAY – Tis the season for city crews to be out on the roads repairing potholes.
Ian Spoljarich, manager of roads, said Wednesday that the milder winter has allowed his crews to get a head start to improve driving conditions city-wide.
“When spring arrived, a lot of those holes were filled already,” Spoljarich notes.
“The less snow and ice that we get on the roads during the winter, the less of an issue potholes are for us when the melt and freezing overnight occurs.”
Spoljarich added that for pothole repairs, crews are utilizing a cold mix and will switch to a hot mix that will coincide with asphalt plants opening around the Victoria Day long weekend.
“The cold mix is more of a temporary repair that is made before the season starts,” added Spoljarich.
“Then we use the hot mix asphalt as a permanent repair. We have started doing sweeping on centre lines on the roads, as well as multi-use trails and some of the residential sidewalks.”
Spoljarich is hoping that crews can ramp up the rest of their work as more snow melts in the coming weeks.
