THUNDER BAY – The Power Centre has put a 50-inch, Samsung 4K smart television up for grabs in an effort to make Christmas a little brighter for Thunder Bay’s homeless population.

The TV is the grand prize in the retailer’s Power of Giving campaign, which asks customers to donate a Christmas gift for Shelter House clients, who are often overlooked during the holiday season.

Power Centre general manager David Radford said it’s the company’s chance to give back to the community in a meaningful way.

“I thought it was a wonderful idea,” Radford said. “The Shelter House is a great organization, we all know that. Thunder Bay is a very giving city and I just love how people love to give here, especially at Christmastime."

Getting in on the chance to win the grand prize is simple, Radford added.

Just drop off a gift in return for a ballot.

He’s hopeful as many people as possible take part.

“Hopefully everybody brings something in. We’d like to see so many gifts it would be crazy. I’d like to see dump trucks worth of gifts.”

Michelle Jordan, the acting executive director at Shelter House, said they’re looking for a variety of presents for their clientele, as well as those who access their community kitchen.

“We just want to make sure that everyone who comes through our doors at Christmastime has a gift to open, especially the kids that come.”

She’s looking for a wide range of presents.

“Anything really,” Jordan said. “Necessity things, but we also expect to get things like board games, maybe for teenagers or decks of cards. For children, toys and for adults maybe things they can use throughout the year, like mitts and hats and the like.”

The contest will run through Dec. 20.

The Power Centre is located at 707 Memorial Ave.
