THUNDER BAY — As a weather system with strong wind gusts moved through the Thunder Bay region on Monday morning, both Synergy North and Hydro One reported multiple power outages due to trees falling onto lines.

A total of over 3,000 Synergy North customers were offline at various points, but in the Oliver Rd/John Street Rd area, the Wardrope Ave/County Park area and on Government Road, but a spokesperson said service was fully restored by noon.

About 11 a.m., the Hydro One website showed 24 separate outages impacting almost 3,000 of its customers just outside Thunder Bay.

The utility initially estimated that power would be restored by mid-afternoon, but at 1:50 pm it was indicating that target would be pushed into the early evening for about 1,300 customers.

Ontario 511 also reported a tree on the road  Monday morning on Highway 11/17 east of the city.

One lane and the west shoulder of the highway was temporarily closed at a point about two kilometres west of Highway 527.

Environment Canada predicted gusts as high as high as 80 or 90 km/h before the wind diminished toward noon.

The maximum recorded wind speed in the Thunder Bay area was 91 km/h at a monitoring station on the Welcome Islands.
