THUNDER BAY -- A judge will determine if there is enough evidence to proceed to trial for a Toronto-area man accused of second-degree murder in the 2022 death of Shawn Newsome.
A preliminary hearing for 28-year-old Isaac Talbot-Hall opened on Monday before Justice Frank Valente in a Thunder Bay courtroom.
Talbot-Hall was first charged with second-degree murder on Nov. 8, 2022 in connection to the death of Newsome, who was from Ajax, Ont.
First responders were called to Andras Court on Cumberland Street South in the early morning hours of Sept. 24, 2022.
They found Newsome at the scene suffering from injuries consistent with an assault. He was transported to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre where he succumbed to his injuries.
Qualynn Loon, 28, of Thunder Bay was also arrested at the time and charged with accessory after the fact to murder. That charge has since been withdrawn at the request of the Crown.
The preliminary hearing for Talbot-Hall is scheduled to last two weeks and the Crown will call between 12 and 17 witnesses.
There is a publication ban on all evidence presented during a preliminary hearing, which is part of the judicial process to determine if there is enough evidence to proceed to trial.
