THUNDER BAY - A judge will determine if there is enough evidence for a Thunder Bay man and woman accused in the 2020 death of 31-year-old Christopher Meeseetawageesic to stand trial on charges of second-degree murder.
A preliminary hearing opened on Wednesday before Justice Elaine Burton for Kenneth Layton Moonias and Natalie Roseanne Moonias.
There is a publication ban in place on all evidence presented during the preliminary hearing.
The two accused were charged with second-degree murder in September 2020 in connection to Meeseetawageesic’s death.
Police were first called to the 400 block of Main Street at approximately 10 a.m. on Aug. 30, 2020 after receiving reports by a member of the public that there was a deceased individual in the area.
Police located the deceased individual who was later identified as Meeseetawageesic of Thunder Bay.
Following an investigation, Meeseetawageesic’s death was determined a homicide and on Sept. 3, Kenneth Moonias and Natalie Moonias were arrested and charged.
The preliminary hearing is scheduled to continue next week. Natalie Moonias is represented by local attorney George Joseph while Kenneth Moonias is represented by Kevin Matthews.
