Snowmobile clubs across Ontario are keeping a close eye on a proposal that could have a major impact on their trail systems.
According to Tory MPP Jim Wilson, Hydro One is looking to have the clubs pay 50 per cent of the taxes on hydro corridors used by snowmobilers. The clubs would also have to install fences, and move trails 15 metres from any hydro tower.
Officials with Thunder Bay Adventure Trails are objecting to such a move. But opponents of the proposed legislation say there’s been very little information released to the public.
Adrian Tessier, with Thunder Bay Adventure Trails, say what is known about Hydro One’s proposed changes could be a real problem for snowmobilers in places like Ignace, Atikokan and Kenora.
Thunder Bay can expect little to no changes.
Tessier adds that snowmobile clubs are all just non-profit groups that help bring tourism and recreation to Ontarians. And he has a real problem with the whole concept of charging snowmobile clubs to use the corridors.
Meanwhile, Tessier says snowmobiling could be making a resurgence in the province.
A recent sale promotion led to more than 38,000 trail permits being purchased, which was higher than expected.
That money is then shared by the various snowmobile clubs for trail maintenance and grooming for the coming year.
Tessier says now they just need a lot of snow, and a lot of volunteers.
