The province has reached a tentative deal with one of the main educators' unions that takes strike action off the table.
The Ministry of Education announced on Friday afternoon that a bargaining process agreement has been reached with the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation, which represents more than 60,000 members in public high schools.
The province said the deal will allow the two sides to continue negotiating a new four-year contract until Oct. 27, which would allow bargaining to remain ongoing without the threat of a strike.
"If this agreement is ratified, a student who entered grade nine in an English public high school last September will have their entire high school experience free from the threat of teacher strikes. That’s something all of us can celebrate," Education Minister Stephen Lecce said in a statement.
Lecce said any issues that remain outstanding past the Oct. 27 deadline would be the subject of binding arbitration.
The province said it is also inviting all other teachers' unions to meet as early as Aug. 28 to enter into similar tentative deals.
