THUNDER BAY -- For 51 years, R. Agostino and Sons Ltd. gas bar has been in business on the corner of John Street Road and John Street.

But on Thursday brothers Frank and Joe Agostino will serve customers for the last time.

“We started the business in 1964 and it’s been a number of good years we’ve been in business here,” said Joe Agostino, part owner of the establishment.

“We’re very happy to be part of the community. It’s just come to the time now for my brother and myself, it’s time to move on.”

The business first started as a restaurant, garage and gas bar, but in 1997 the brothers made some big changes and replaced the restaurant and garage with a Robin’s Donuts franchise, a convenience store and car wash.

“We had a real great run in business here,” said Agostino, adding the business has been bought by new owners and will remain an Esso gas station.

How the rest will be developed is unknown at this time and the station will be closed for about three months, confirmed Agostino.

“I think the new owners will appreciate what’s here already and maybe develop it to another level. I’m hoping the community here will appreciate what we’ve done and we appreciate all the support we had over the years and I just want to say thank to everybody out there from my brother and myself,” he said.

“Dealing with all the people who have come through our doors has been very exciting.”
