THUNDER BAY — A rainstorm in the Thunder Bay area has prompted Environment Canada to issue a special weather statement late Friday morning.
Total rainfall amounts of 10 to 20 mm are projected over two days with locally higher amounts possible according to the Environment Canada.
"Rain, at times heavy, ahead of an approaching low pressure is expected this morning and continuing into Saturday night. With thunderstorms possible, local rainfall amounts could exceed 20 mm over some areas. The rain will transition to flurries Saturday night as temperatures drop to below freezing over the area," reads the statement.
The rainfall is expected to combine with melting snow, said the statement, and as the frozen ground has a reduced ability to absorb water and flooding is a cause for concern, particularly in low-lying areas.
