THUNDER BAY — Thunder Bay’s largest homeless shelter has announced the departure of its executive director after less than a year-and-a-half at the helm.
Cal Rankin, who was hired as executive director of the Shelter House in May 2022 after previously serving in the role from 2001 to 2012, departed the position on Wednesday.
Board chair Paul Capon announced Rankin’s departure in a release Wednesday, saying Rankin “will be pursuing other interests.”
“We take this opportunity to thank Cal for his hard work and dedication to the Shelter House over many years and to wish him well in his next adventure,” he said.
Reached by phone Thursday, Capon said he could not provide further details on the reason for Rankin’s departure.
During his most recent tenure, Rankin drew attention to funding challenges that forced the shelter to cancel its SOS van program, and challenged its ability to recruit and retain staff.
Operations manager Michelle Morgan will take over as interim executive director of the 62-bed shelter, while the organization searches for a permanent replacement.
