THUNDER BAY — The Thunder Bay region is about to get a taste of the unprecedented heat wave that's shattered records in western Canada over the past week.
Environment Canada says the city is poised to set new high-temperature marks of its own this weekend.
The forecast for Saturday calls for a high of 38 C or 100 F, with the temperature falling only to 20 C overnight.
Sunday won't be quite as hot, with a predicted maximum of 35 C, but that would easily be a record-breaker as well.
The current records at Thunder Bay airport for both days are 32 C, with the mark for July 3 having been set in 2012, and the mark for July 4 having been established last year.
However, meteorologist Nadia Jagdeo says a new weather system will subdue the inferno very quickly next week, with temperatures falling well back into the twenties starting Monday.
"A nice cold front is going to go through. You're going to get some showers and some nice, cool northerly winds," Jagdeo said.
