Construction in the city is on pace to break a record set just last year.
City council was given an update Monday night on construction activity in Thunder Bay. AS of the end of June around 731 building permits were issues with a $134 million construction value. In 2012 the city saw $216 million in construction, the highest its ever been.
Chief building official Des Stoltz said this year has already issued permits for 85 new homes, the new long-term care facility on Lillie Street, two hotels, and Toys R Us among others. With another 65 homes expected along with condos at the Thunder Bay Country Club, a strip mall and two new fire halls the $216 million should be reached by the end of the year.
"Or better," Stolz said.
"We're in a bit of a building boom there's no question about it," city manager Tim Commisso said. "All you have to do is drive around town."
And with that new construction comes new tax growth, something city administration will get a better handle on in the fall. But at the end of the day, tax assessment is up to the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation Commisso told council.
