THUNDER BAY – Persians and poppies are a pretty good summer match.

Recognizing the importance of the Royal Canadian Legion’s annual poppy campaign, along with the 100th anniversary of the adoption of the blood red flower as the symbol of military sacrifice around the world, a decision made at the Port Arthur Hotel, Thunder Bay’s The Persian Man has come up with a unique campaign to help the cause.

During the month of July, 25 cents from each specially red-iced Persian pasty at the bakery’s Balmoral and Tungsten street locations, will be donated to the local poppy funds, which are used to support Canadian veterans in a variety of ways.

Kim Treichler, colour party commander at Port Arthur Branch No. 5, said the centennial anniversary marked the perfect occasion for The Persian Man to give back to those who served the nation throughout the course of its history, up to and including this day.

“We have veterans all the time who are asking for something and we try to help as much as we can. We can’t, obviously, help everyone as there are restrictions that are laid down, but for the most part, we do our best,” Treichler said.

Persians, which were developed in Thunder Bay, are similar to a cinnamon bun, but frosted with pink, berry-flavoured icing.
