THUNDER BAY – Marc Staal didn’t have to wait until free agency opens later this week to find out where he’ll play next season.
It turns out, he's not going anywhere.
The veteran Thunder Bay defenceman on Sunday inked a one-year deal to remain with the Detroit Red Wings for a second season.
Staal, 34, was eligible to enter unrestricted free agency on July 28.
The 14-year-veteran, who spent his first 13 seasons with the New York Rangers, had three goals and 10 points in 56 games with the Red Wings last season and has 46 goals and 198 points in 948 National Hockey League games in his career.
Sportsnet’s Chris Johnson said the deal is worth $2 million and includes a full no-movement clause.
Older brother Eric Staal, dealt to Montreal from Buffalo ahead of the trade deadline, is set to enter unrestricted free agency on Wednesday.
