An area MP is asking the Governor General of Canada to refuse Prime Minister Stephen Harper's request to prorogue Parliament until October.
Bruce Hyer (Ind., Thunder Bay-Superior North) has written Gov. Gen. David Johnston saying the prime minister is using the prorogation process to avoid questions from the opposition about the Senate scandal around some senators expense claims.
This is the third time since 2008 the Conservative government has prorogued Parliament and Hyer said it is ridiculous.
"It's a symbolic thing. It allows you to reset the agenda if you really feel the need to do that, but to take a month or longer?" said Hyer, adding he is ready to get back to work.
"Mr. Harper is clearly just avoiding having to deal with the Senate scandal and other problems," he said.
In his letter Hyer states that under this prorogation, the government has lost legitimacy in the eyes of most Canadians.
He said he plans to follow up his letter with another to the Governor General asking him to call a federal election.
"The prime minister has lost the confidence of many of the people in the House of Commons, including many of his own backbenchers. He's lost the confidence of most Canadians," he said.
Harper prorogued Parliament in 2008 as the federal government faced a non-confidence vote and he prorogued it again in 2010 during committee hearings on the treatment of Afghan detainees.
