Rental truck smashed into a city apartment building

Damage is extensive after a vehicle broke through into the common room of an eight-storey seniors' housing complex.

THUNDER BAY — Police continue to investigate a collision that saw a rented moving truck smash into an apartment building operated by the District of Thunder Bay Social Services Administration Board.

No one was reported injured.

The incident occurred Sunday afternoon at Clark Towers on Regent Street at Red River Road, where the vehicle somehow went out of control and broke through into a common room that's used for social and recreational purposes.

Two people were inside at the time, but fortunately they were on the opposite side of the room.

A spokesperson for the social services board has described the damage in the vicinity of the collision as "pretty extensive."

The common room is an extension from the main part of the building, so there's no structural impact to any of the 114 apartments in the eight-storey seniors' housing complex.

Until the common room can be repaired, it will remain locked and inaccessible to tenants.

It's not clear yet what led up to the collision, and a police spokesperson said Wednesday that no charges have been laid so far.
