OTTAWA — Justin Trudeau’s future as Canada’s prime minister looks to be up in the air.
CTV News is reporting that Trudeau is considering resigning in the wake of former finance minister Chrystia Freeland announcing her resignation from cabinet.
The network reports Trudeau is also considering proroguing Parliament, a move that could prevent his government from falling.
Freeland’s resignation comes on the day the fall economic statement is set to be delivered in Ottawa.
Minister of Indigenous Services, Patty Hajdu, wished Freeland well on Monday when she was encountered by media looking for reaction for the departure of the former deputy prime minister.
“I wish her the best. These are difficult and personal decisions and obviously she’s made that decision and I respect her for it,” Hajdu said.
Hajdu, who represents the Liberals in Thunder Bay-Superior North, did not respond when asked if Trudeau should continue on as leader.
Dougall Media has also reached out to Thunder Bay-Atikokan MP Marcus Powlowski, whose office responded that he’s not available, and Kenora’s Conservative MP, Eric Melillo.
NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh told reporters he believes Trudeau’s time as prime minister is done, but refused to say whether he would bring down the minority Liberal government, stating he’d have more answers at a news conference later in the day.
Freeland resigned ahead of the economic statement, saying she does not agree with Trudeau on a number of issues, including the controversial GST holiday.
