THUNDER BAY – The Regional Food Distribution Association has found the space it was looking for, thanks to the Thunder Bay International Airports Authority.
Volker Kromm, the RFDA’s executive director, on Wednesday announced they will take temporary possession for the former ACT Labs hangar on the airport property. The move will allow RFDA staff to put together hampers to feed the hungry in a socially distanced manner.
Last month Kromm put out a call to the city announcing they were in need of more space during the pandemic, noting their Syndicate Street facility was too small to allow people to properly separate.
The move was made possible in part from a sponsorship from Synergy North, the employees and contractors of Impala Canada and Fiera Capital.
“With this combined effort, the RFDA will have the space it needs to get through the holiday season in a pandemic and make sure that everyone is fed at a time when monetary choices are more difficult than ever,” Kromm said in a release.
Robert Mace, the president and CEO of Synergy North, said it was a great way to ensure no one goes hungry during the holiday season and everyone stays safe at the same time.
“While this year may look and feel different from most, the holidays are still a time for everyone to come together and fulfil the needs of our communities. Non-profit organizations like the RFDA have worked tirelessly to overcome the obstacles created by the pandemic and we are proud to be a partner supporting their success,” Mace said.
The first shipment is expected to arrive on Thursday.
