Ridgeway Street house fire called in by passerby

Thunder Bay firefighters encountered heavy smoke and flames at a house on Ridgeway Street East

THUNDER BAY —  Thunder Bay Fire Rescue released details Monday about a blaze that occurred Friday afternoon in a south-side residential neighbourhood.

It happened in the 2600 block of Ridgeway Street East, where the first arriving units encountered heavy smoke and flames coming from the rear of a 1 1/2 storey home.

The alarm was called in by a passerby.

While a crew applied water from the exterior, other firefighters assisted a resident in getting out of the house safely.

Damage was contained mainly to an exterior wall, an eave and the underside of a breezeway.

Deputy Chief Martin Hynna credited the early notification by the passerby and the quick response by firefighters for preventing the blaze from extending to the interior of the home.

No one was injured in the incident.

The cause of the fire has not been disclosed, but it is not considered suspicious in nature.
