Road work in full swing now that hot mix asphalt is available

The roll-out strategy for road repair is similar to the one used over the snowy winter with the immediate focus on main roads and transit routes

THUNDER BAY – The city of Thunder Bay is now able to roll out crews to properly fix potholes now that they have access to hot-mix asphalt from Bruno’s Contracting Ltd., which was the first plant to open in the city.

“Monday was the first day that hot-mix asphalt plants opened up, so right away we had crews go there and start filling these holes on our mainline streets,” said Ian Spoljarich, roads manager.

The roll-out strategy for road repair is similar to the one used over the snowy winter with the immediate focus on main roads and transit routes.

“Right now we’re focusing on our mainline, so collector and arterial streets, which also includes bus routes and bike lanes,” said Spoljarich.

“And then after that, they go into residential areas.”

Thunder Bay drivers will soon feel much less worried about possible damage from road conditions as crews continue to patch not only potholes but the smaller harder to manage cracks as well, the city said.

“With the hot mix available now, we can fill some of those smaller cracks that were a little difficult to fill with the cold mix patch before,” said Spoljarich.

“So we should see a little smoother ride now that we have that available to us.”
