THUNDER BAY — A significant water leak forced the closure of the Thunder Bay Public Library branch at County Fair Mall on Monday afternoon.
With the temperature reaching 6 C in the city, melting snow and ice on the roof was the source of the water, which apparently backed up because of a frozen drain.
Workers hired by the Toronto-based owner of the mall were brought in to deal with the problem.
"There's going to be some cleanup involved...There is quite a bit of water on the floor, not just in the library, from what I've been given to understand," said TBPL spokesperson Raili Roy.
Video obtained by Newswatch also showed water falling through the ceiling of the Ontario election returning office for Thunder Bay-Superior North.
"The returning office has water on the floor. They let us know it was coming," Roy said.
She said library staff moved quickly to relocate books out of the danger zone.
Roy said the TBPL will bring in equipment as soon as possible to dry things out, but the branch will remain closed until at least Wednesday.
