The future of the Royal Edward Arms is expected to be discussed at tonight's Council meeting.
The Thunder Bay District Social Services Board has decided to hand the building back to the city in 2015. That news has come as a shock to some on council who don't sit on the board.
Coun. Rebecca Johnson will likely be the one to raise the issue. While there are still two years left on the lease between the DSSAB and the city, many questions remain. Some are concerned about the loss of more than 60 affordable housing units, while more than 1,200 people are currently on a waitlist for social housing.
The Royal Edward Arms is in rough shape inside and needs millions of dollars in upgrades.
The City Manager says a report on the future of the historic building will come forward in the fall.
Outside of that single issue, it is likely going to be a light night at city hall. There’s only one item on the agenda, which will see the city renew a deal with the student unions at the university and college for unlimited transit services.
