Ruling on Flair Airlines is good news for Thunder Bay Airport

The Canadian Transportation Agency says Flair meets the definition of 'Canadian'

THUNDER BAY — Low-fare airline Flair can continue to fly in Canada as the result of a decision by the Canadian Transportation Agency.

The carrier was under review by the transportation regulator which issued a preliminary ruling in March that said Flair may not be controlled by Canadians and therefore might not meet the requirements of the Canada Transportation Act.

On Wednesday, however, the agency said the airline had addressed the concerns raised in its preliminary determination, and that necessary changes have been made to ensure Flair strictly meets the definition of "Canadian."

One of those changes will ensure that Canadian shareholders make up at least half of the board of directors.

"Though we never doubted it, it's still fantastic to say once and for all 'Flair is Canadian,' said CEO Stephen Jones.

The airline began service between Thunder Bay and Toronto in June 2021.

Service between the two cities was suspended at the end of April 2022 because of improvements to the Thunder Bay Airport runway that's used by Flair's Boeing 737 aircraft.

The airline said it's committed to resuming service at the beginning of November, once the runway work is finished.
