TORONTO -- A Sachigo Lake First Nation resident says he plans to use some of his $1 million lottery win to give back to the community, located about 425 kilometres north of Sioux Lookout.

Dean Beardy, 58, bought the winning Lotto Max ticket at Bobby's Corner on Armstrong Street in Vermilion Bay, winning a Dec. 7 draw.

He described the moment when he discovered his win on a smartphone app as surreal and joyous.

"I couldn't believe it,” he said in a statement shared by OLG. “I almost cried. I had to convince myself it was real!"

The first people to hear the good news were his parents, who he said he celebrated with over tea and cookies.

Beardy said he plans to build a chapel in the remote First Nation.

"Everything I do in my life is for my community,” he said. “They are my family.”
