THUNDER BAY — The Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker Samuel Risley has arrived in the port of Thunder Bay.

The Risley remained docked at Keefer Terminal on Monday afternoon.

Although she may not have a lot of work to do on this assignment, some ice has formed in the Thunder Bay area, and the late-season push is on to move as much grain as possible out of local elevators before the locks at Sault Ste. Marie close on Jan. 15.

The coast guard says the Risley is here to break up ice as required in order to allow commercial vessels to move in and out of the harbour in the closing days of the shipping season.

Based on the schedule for expected arrivals and departures, a spokesperson for the Thunder Bay Port Authority said she may be called into action next on Wednesday.
