THUNDER BAY — Fifty-one years after it opened, Sir Winston Churchill Collegiate and Vocational Institute will graduate its last group of students at the end of this month.
On Friday, June 8, current and former students, staff and community members will participate in a final farewell to the school which is being closed as part of a school consolidation process by the Lakehead District Public School Board.
"We are inviting all current and former Trojans to join us for one more look at the school and to celebrate the legacy of the school that has been a significant part of the community since 1967," said Churchill Principal Dave Isherwood.
"Our students and staff have worked incredibly hard to ensure that there will be a lively and respectful send-off truly fitting this great school," Isherwood said.
The event, scheduled for 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., will start with the opening of a time capsule that was closed in 1992.
It will also include tours of the building, old yearbooks and other memorabilia, a memory wall, live music and free food.
Plans for the new addition at Westgate Collegiate will be on display.
Four hundred and fifty Churchill students will transfer to Westgate in the fall, while Churchill is demolished to make way for a new elementary school.
