THUNDER BAY — On the last day of the month, Monday's forecast high of 23 C – nine degrees above normal – along with no precipitation cemented what was already shaping up to be a record-setting September in Thunder Bay.
According to Environment Canada, between Sept. 1 and Sept. 29 the average daily maximum temperature was 23.3 C, breaking the record of 22.2 established in 2009.
That's "a fairly wide margin" in meteorological terms, said senior meteorologist David Rodgers.
He noted that the long-term average high for the month is only 19.2 C, "so obviously, with this past month, it's been well above all of those numbers."
Rodgers also provided additional data, showing that from Sept. 1 to Sept. 29, the average daily temperature was 15.9 C, compared with the previous record of about 15 C and the long-term average for the month of only 12.4 C.
In terms of precipitation, this will go down as the driest September ever at Thunder Bay.
He said the previous record was set in 2009, when about 13.5 millimetres of rain fell.
This month, the city has received only about 7 mm, but the forecast for the first week of October shows a good chance of showers on Wednesday and a fall toward normal temperature values in the coming days.
