THUNDER BAY - A serious motor vehicle collision has closed a section of Highway 17 in Oliver Paipoonge.
The head-on collision between a tractor trailer travelling eastbound on the highway and a small car travelling westbound occurred near the Kakabeka Curling Club around 9 a.m. Thursday.
Both vehicles left the roadway and appeared to have sustained heavy damage. Firefighters from Oliver Paipoonge Fire & Emergency Services were still extinguishing flames on the tractor trailer around 10:45 a.m.
Ontario Provincial Police could not yet confirm the condition of the drivers involved.
Highway 17 remained closed between Fraser Road and Jelly Road Thursday afternoon. A detour is available via Highway 102.
