THUNDER BAY - City officials are urging drivers to use caution when turning left onto Neebing Avenue from Arthur Street.

A video was recorded and posted to Facebook earlier this month. The video shows a white jeep, heading east waiting to make a left turn onto Neebing Avenue from Arthur Street by the Valhalla Inn.

The streetlights facing the jeep turn red and the driver attempts to make the turn.

However, the west bound set of lights opposite are still green as they don't always change simultaneously with the east bound lights.

Dozens of commenters who saw the video say they've also witnessed or been involved in other near-misses at this intersection.

Despite the concern, city engineering director Kayla Dixon said the streetlights are functioning how they were designed to adding drivers need to be aware of oncoming traffic.

“Right now, we believe the intersection is operating properly and we are also confirming with police that their understanding of that is the same,” Dixon said.

“There are other intersections in the city that are programmed similarly and it’s the driver's responsibility to make sure when they are turning left that traffic is cleared or slowing down.”

Dixon says they'll continue to monitor activity at the intersection and study traffic and collision logs to see if any changes need to be made.

But until then it's the drivers responsibility to ensure they are making safe left turns.
