THUNDER BAY -- A seventh employee at Lac Des Iles Mine has tested positive for COVID-19.

The latest case was confirmed on Tuesday by the Northwestern Health Unit and the individual is isolating at home. The health unit earlier in the day announced an individual in Atikokan had tested positive outside the region. The person was in isolation prior to the diagnosis.

It comes a week after the first confirmed case, an individual who was at the mine from March 29 to April 4. Five more cases were confirmed on Saturday. Three of those individuals are in self-isolation and two are still at the mine site in isolation and receiving medical care.

Testing is underway for two symptomatic individuals still at the mine site, located 85 kilometres north of Thunder Bay.

Mine officials say they are working closely with the Thunder Bay District Health Unit to conduct contact tracing of all the affected individuals.
