THUNDER BAY — Environment Canada has declared a severe thunderstorm watch for the Thunder Bay area.
A notice issued shortly after 5 p.m. Wednesday stated that conditions were favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms late in the afternoon and during the evening.
Environment Canada said a line of thunderstorms was expected to track across the area ahead of an approaching cold front.
Nickel-sized hail and wind up to 90 kilometres per hour are possible.
"The primary threat with these storms will be strong wind gusts," forecasters cautioned.
Emergency Management Ontario recommends that people take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.
Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.
Residents are advised to continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada.
