THUNDER BAY -- While their new SOS Van is on the road, the Shelter House is now struggling to stock their shelves with food.
“As you can see the shelves are very bare,” development officer Amber Prairie said.
Because of the shortage, the Shelter House is launching a drive at the Real Canadian Superstore, open Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Prairie said the summer months are typically some of the leaner ones because of the lack of food drives that take place.
“At Christmas time everybody is very generous, and we have a fall food drive that does very well,” Prairie said. “But we’ve been seeing a drop in donations and this is the best way to get people all in one place.”
The organization provides food to roughly 700 people per day.
“Homelessness is all year round,” she continued. “We need to feed people.”
The non-perishable food items most needed are peanut butter, jam, mayonnaise, canned meats, and pasta sauces.
“Our volunteers have to get really creative with what they make, but they always do a really great job and put food out for all our residents,” Prairie said.
Prairie said for those who can’t attend the Superstore drive, there will be a space by the food court in Victoriaville Mall where cans can be dropped off. The space will accept donations until August 31.
