THUNDER BAY – Local shoppers were back out on the hunt for more items on Thursday.
With Christmas wrapped up for another year, there was a steady stream of bargain searchers at the Intercity Shopping Centre for Boxing Day.
“There are a ton of good deals today,” Matthew said in between purchases. “We went to Urban Planet and we saved around 75 per cent of what the normal cost is.
“There’s a lot of people here and it’s really a great time to shop. We’re just getting started.”
Other shoppers found things to be not as crazy as they expected.
“It’s been pretty busy in some of the stores, but it’s also been dead in others,” Lindsay said.
“We’ve been looking at going to some other stores in town, but a lot of them aren’t open today. So we’ll probably be going later this week.”
As is the case with Black Friday, many stores had already started their Boxing Day sales in the lead-up to Christmas.
Dave Radford, who is general manager of The Power Centre, said that their Boxing Week approach has had a lot of added benefits.
“The nice thing about that is we get to spend more time with the people,” Radford said. “That’s especially important nowadays, as the new technology can sometimes be confusing.”
“It’s not as hectic as it would be if we just had one day of sales, but there’s a lot of people here today buying appliances and TVs”
Radford said that traditionally, Boxing Day has been a big television day for the store, but that’s started to change in recent years.
“A lot of people are trending towards that appliances side now,” Radford added. “I’m speaking with a couple right now who are buying an entire kitchen of appliances today.”
