When it comes to distracted driving, should cyclists be held to the same standard as those in motor vehicles?

It’s a question the police asked Tuesday afternoon after a cyclist was sent to hospital with non-life threatening Monday evening due to a collision with a mini-van.

Police responded to the collision at the intersection of High Street and Kenwood Avenue around 8:30 p.m. The cyclist is being charged with failing to make a turn in safety. The investigation showed that the cyclist was wearing headphones while riding her bike.

While Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act clearly states that no one shall operate a motor vehicle while holding or using an entertainment device, the media release wonders if cyclists should also have to adhere to the law.

“Should cyclists be held to the same standard as drivers of motor vehicles when it comes to distracted driving?” Police ask in the release.
