Side-by-side rollover injures two near Kenora

Injuries were non life-threatening, police say, reminding the public of the rules of the road when it comes to off-road vehicle use.

KENORA, Ont. -- Ontario Provincial Police say two people were injuredin a rollover of a side-by-side vehicle on Highway 596 in the Kenora area. 

In a release issued on Tuesday morning, police say the incident occurred just after 12:30 p.m. on Monday near the intersection with Pickerel Lake Road. Both occupants of the side-by-side were taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries. The two victims were females in their 20s, according to OPP. 

Police say the public should be aware of the rules associated with the use of off-road vehicles on public roadways. 

  • Must operate on the shoulder of the road (wherever possible) in the same direction of traffic
  • Seat belts in a utility terrain vehicle/side by side's must be worn
  • Must be 16 years of age and hold a minimum class G2/M2 driver's licence
  • Must wear a helmet and have valid insurance and registration
  • Passengers are only allowed on vehicles designed to carry a passenger
  • Passengers must be a minimum of eight years old
  • If speed limit is 50 km/h or lower, you cannot exceed 20 km/h
  • If speed limit exceeds 50 km/h,  you cannot exceed 50 km/hr, including highways
