Significant dump of snow expected on Wednesday

A Colorado Low will bring snow and gusting wind to Thunder Bay

THUNDER BAY — Monday may be the first day of spring on the calendar, but it doesn't mean Thunder Bay is out of the grips of winter weather.

Environment Canada is expected to issue a special weather statement or a winter travel advisory for the area because of a developing low pressure system in the U.S., which will bring a significant amount of snow to the area.

Meteorologist Geoff Coulson said Monday morning that current forecast models indicate the city will receive up to 15 centimetres of snow.

"This does look like another widespread snow producer for Thunder Bay and Northwestern Ontario in general. The system is going to get itself together Tuesday morning in the foothills of the Rockies in Colorado," he said.

Coulson said the system will move steadily northeastward, and will likely bring snow to the city late Tuesday evening or early Wednesday morning.

"Then that snow is likely to continue through the day on Wednesday before tapering off Wednesday evening. In addition, we could be dealing with some gusting wind from the east and northeast as the snow is falling."

He said the possible range of accumulations currently looks to be between eight and 15 centimetres, but that will be fine-tuned by forecasters over the next 24 hours or so.
