THUNDER BAY – It’s hopeful an addition to the Simpson Street community garden will make the space safer and more welcoming for all community members.
A new labyrinth-inspired area has been created and includes a variety of plants from herbal and medicinal to perennials, berry plants and shrubs. In the centre is a turtle made from mosaic patio stone to represent Turtle Island.
The project was a collaboration between NorWest Community Health Centres and Willow Springs Creative Centre. It was funded with a grant from the City of Thunder Bay’s Clean, Green and Beautiful committee.
Judi Vinni, coordinator for Willow Springs Creative Centre, said they were looking for something to add to the Simpson Street community garden and she hopes people will be able to walk to the path of the labyrinth and use the plants.
“We are trying to grow as much food as possible for anybody who wants or needs food in the area,” said Vinni. “It would be a good drawing card. Horticulture – the act of gardening and being in gardens – is so beneficial. Then when you layer on all the medicinal plants, it’s culturally fantastic. We just thought it fit.”
On Wednesday, an official opening of the new area of the garden was held, dinner was served to anyone who stopped by. The menu included a chili made with vegetables from the garden.
The garden is located at 433 and 435 Simpson Street.
The Clean, Green and Beautiful committee’s mandate is to support projects that beautify Thunder Bay and enhance civic pride.
