THUNDER BAY- This year’s renovation of Simpson Street is coming to a close until after the winter.

City of Thunder Bay project engineer, Brian Newman, said contractors are finishing the pipe work on Robertson Street and filling the road with gravel before final paving next year.

“There's a tie in there where we start at and we go as far south as Dease (Street) because of some of the decrepit buildings and some of the fire issues we had and some tax sales,” said Newman.

The $5-million project includes the replacement of sewer, water and stormwater pipes and resurfacing roadways and street lights on multiple roads such as Dease, Ogden, Cameron, and Simpson streets.

“Right now, we're currently finishing up all the pipework up to Robertson, the sewer and the water are all complete. We're just flushing the water to get a covering residual, so we could do final tie-ins,” Newman said.

Newman noted that stopping at Robertson allowed them time to plan for the next section of the Simpson Street area.
