New funding helps Sioux Lookout Airport expansion (3 Photos)

Terminal handled over twice the number of passengers it was designed for.

SIOUX LOOKOUT, ON — Sioux Lookout Regional Airport on Tuesday celebrated a major expansion and upgrading of airport facilities with an additional funding announcement from the federal government.

The $15.6 million dollar project has been funded jointly by the Municipality of Sioux Lookout and the federal and Ontario governments. Town officials say the municipal contribution will be covered by airport revenues.

The expansion includes improvements to the air terminal building that was designed for annual passenger traffic of 55,000 but has been averaging well over twice that number since 2010.

By doubling the terminal's size, officials say the airport is now set up to stay competitive and continue to serve as an economic engine for the community.

The municipality outlined some of the key changes accomplished by the upgrading:

-alleviation of congested passenger queuing lines, concession food court tables and lack of seating

-improved accessibility, parking and the overall travelling experience

-proper baggage make-up areas and space for expanded services including passenger screening in the future

Kenora MP Bob Nault on Tuesday announced additional FedNor funding of $287,000 for a quiet lounge and triage area for elders and medical passengers of the Sioux Lookout First Nations Health Authority, two car rental service spaces. three concession areas, a restaurant and a marketing wall to promote the community and local businesses.

Sioux Lookout Airport is served by scheduled flights operated by three carriers and charter flights by five other carriers.
