A man is in hospital with self-inflicted, life-threatening injuries after an incident Monday north of Highway 11/17.

Ontario Provincial Police say they were called to assist in locating a distraught man in the area of Highway 527 and the Dorion cutoff. Members of the emergency response team located the man about 6 p.m. on Monday, barricaded in his vehicle.

The man discharged a firearm. OPP officers immediately administered first aid and the man was sent to Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre for treatment.

No police officers were injured in the incident.

Because a firearm was discharged and an injury did occur to a member of the public, the special investigations unit has invoked its mandate and will take over the investigation.
