THUNDER BAY -- Ontario's Special Investigations Unit has been called in after a 58-year-old man was seriously injured in a police-involved shooting just outside of Thunder Bay.

The victim was shot and wounded by a Thunder Bay Police Services officer on Thursday afternoon, after the man allegedly first shot at police.

According to a release issued by the province's Special Investigations Unit, at about 2:18 p.m. police received a 911 call from motorists, who reported a man with a shotgun was walking along Highway 11/17 and Pebblestone Road, about 30 kilometres west of Thunder Bay.

Officers responded and located the man, who discharged the weapon, hitting a police cruiser. The officer was not struck by gunfire.

Police then closed Highway 11/17 in both directions in the area of Pebblestone Road. The highway has since reopened.

As a result of the SIU invoking its mandate, the Thunder Bay Police Service cannot provide further details at this time.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online at: https://siu.on.ca/en/appeals.php
