THUNDER BAY — Depending on when conditions improve, visitors to Sleeping Giant Provincial Park will get an opportunity again to do some skating through the forest there this winter.
Park staff completed work on a 400-metre ice-skating trail just before Christmas.
But it was open for less than a week before it had to be closed on Dec. 27 because of unseasonably mild temperatures.
The trail, located within the Marie Louise Lake campground, will reopen after colder weather returns.
It was first developed as a 350-metre oval by the park maintenance group leader in the winter of 2022/2023.
For this season, the path was extended by 50 metres.
According to Ontario Parks, the skating path has been quite popular, especially on weekends.
When conditions allow, it's open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Sleeping Giant Park also offers 70 km of cross-country skiing trails, but conditions are currently reported to be poor.
All vehicles entering the park must display a daily permit that can be obtained either on-site at the park office, or up to five days in advance on the Ontario Parks reservation website.
