Sliders can start enjoying the hill at Chapples Park

The sliding hill was out of commission between January and February of last year as it was relocated.

THUNDER BAY -- For those looking for a new place to go sledding, the Chapples Park option is a go for 2024.

The sliding hill closed last January in preparation for the start of construction of the city’s new indoor tennis facility.

Werner Schwar, the city’s Supervisor of Parks and Open Space planning, noted Monday that the work wiped out much of the sledding season in 2023.

“The Tennis Centre was responsible for moving the sledding hill from where it used to be to the new location, which is slightly to the south of the old location on the other side of the ring road,” Schwar said.

“That work was undertaken during January and February and was completed in February and into the beginning of March.”

The hill can now be enjoyed south of Chapples Drive and west of the overflow parking lot.

Schwar added that the hill is open and that there is signage on the ring road directing everyone to the new location.

Negotiations remain ongoing between the Thunder Bay Community Tennis Centre and the City of Thunder Bay over the indoor tennis project at Chapples Park.
