THUNDER BAY -- A sliding Canadian dollar could make the local port more competitive.

Thunder Bay Port Authority CEO Tim Heney said the port was holding its own when the dollar was at par with the U.S. but now companies in the South are using the Seaway even more. European steel is shipped to Lake Michigan. Those boats head to the Lakehead to pick up grain.

"We do see the U.S. dollar as an opportunity to make us more competitive," he said.

The shipping season closed Jan. 14 touting another huge year for grain and other cargo, seeing a total of 8.9 million tonnes head through the port. It also saw around 15 special cargo shipments come through, from steel to mining equipment.

"It's been a lot of factors going in the right direction for us," Heney said.
