THUNDER BAY — Students at St. Ignatius High school were placed under a shelter in place order on Monday morning after a small fire broke out near the facility’s new artificial turf field.

According to a statement front the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board, smoke was seen rising from a pallet of rubber pellets stored next to the field.

Police and fire crews responded to the small blaze, which was quickly brought under control.

The shelter order remained in place until 10:35 a.m. when it was clear there was no environmental risk.

The investigation continues.
