SHUNIAH, Ont. — A smoke alarm is being credited with saving the lives of the occupants of a residence in Shuniah early this morning,.
Shuniah Fire & Emergency Services responded at 1:30 a.m. to a report of smoke in a camp at Amethyst Harbour.
Crews arrived at the Harbour Bay Avenue seasonal residence to find an active fire in the wall space behind a fireplace.
Firefighters cut into both the wall and the floor to expose the flames so they could be extinguished.
They determined that the fire was caused by the deterioration of old bricks and mortar which were no longer able to properly contain a fire in the fireplace.
"Fortunately in this incident, the residents were alerted to the fire from a smoke alarm that ultimately saved their lives," a statement from Shuniah Fire & Emergency Services said.
