THUNDER BAY – It turns out a smouldering barbecue was the cause of smoke that led Thunder Bay Fire Rescue crews to a South Cumberland Street apartment complex.

According to a release issued early Wednesday morning, crews were called to the high-rise structure at 7:38 p.m. on Tuesday, having received reports of a possible fire.

Upon arrival crews reported seeing smoke on a fifth-floor balcony, but after searching the floor, only found light smoke and no fire. They took the search a floor below, and found nothing, a similar find when they investigated the sixth floor.

Two apartments were breached and no fire was found, but further investigation led them back to the fourth floor, where an extinguished barbecue was revealed to be the culprit.

The building was then ventilated and smoke was cleared before crews cleared the scene.

Residents are reminded to maintain working smoke alarms and TBFR noted it’s smart to have an all-purpose fire extinguisher nearby when cooking or barbecuing.
