THUNDER BAY – A crash in a Kamloops, B.C. residential neighbourhood has claimed the life of a Canadian Forces Snowbirds pilot.
Capt. Jennifer Casey, a public affairs officer for the demonstration squadron, and former journalist, died in the crash, which appeared to occur shortly after takeoff. Capt. Richard MacDougall, who was also in the plane, was suffered serious, but non life-threatening injuries.
The Snowbirds, who were in Thunder Bay a week ago, were on a cross-country Operation Inspiration tour, saluting health-care and other essential workers, flying over hospitals and residential neighbourhoods to spread cheer during the COVID-19 pandemic.
City manager Norm Gale offered his condolence on social media.
“Earlier this week I was truly inspired by (the Snowbrids) flying over (Thunder Bay). Now, I’m saddened. But I remain ever grateful and appreciative,” Gale said, offering his condolences to the team, over Twitter.
The Snowbirds issued a statement late Sunday.
“The RCAF has suffered another tragic loss of a dedicated member of the RCAF team. We are deeply saddened and grieve alongside Jenn’s family and friends. Our thoughts are also with the loved ones of Captain MacDougall. We hope for a swift recovery from his injuries.”
Casey was from Nova Scotia, a province still reeling from the deadly crash of a military helicopter off the coast of Greece on April 29 that killed six, and the brutal killing of 22 people by a crazed gunman earlier in the month.
Fifteen years ago, in 2005, a Snowbird pilot managed to safely eject from his plane prior to a show in Thunder Bay.
