THUNDER BAY — It's time to get out the sculpting tools – and the mittens – as the city gears up for its most wintry arts initiative
The City of Thunder Bay has put a call out for artists to create snow sculptures for the annual SnowDay on the Waterfront on Family Day on Feb. 17, 2025.
SnowDay on the Waterfront gets people outside and enjoying the season. The snow sculptures are what everyone looks forward to each year.
There are two snow sculpture competitions: one for professional artists and professional artist-led teams, the other for organizations, and community groups. Artists and groups from across the region and beyond are encouraged to apply, according to a media release issued by the City of Thunder Bay.
New this year, is a third category, the No Snow, No Problem sculpture competition
Open to the professionals, the new sculpture competition gives artists an opportunity to explore climate-resilient materials to create temporary art installations, adding an additional flair to the sculpture competition.
“We are thrilled to add a new competition opportunity this year,” said Laurie Abthorpe, Cultural Development & Public Art Coordinator, “including materials beyond snow in our temporary art installations guarantees an enchanting winter art experience no matter what the weather brings.”
The deadline for to apply is Jan. 10, 2025 at 11:59 pm EST.
