Sobey leads by 9 at District Amateur

Two-time champion looking to add a third win at the final local golf major of the season.

THUNDER BAY – Colin Sobey is lapping the field at the Teleco District Amateur, the final local golf major of the 2023 season.

The two-time champion has a nine-shot lead over Kevin Jackson and Nathan Lepore headed into Sunday’s third and final round of the tournament, which will shift to Whitewater Golf Course after opening at Chapples Golf Course on Day 1 and Strathcona Golf Course on Day 2.

Sobey opened with a five-under 66 on Saturday, one of four golfers under par on the day. On Sunday he was the only contestant in red figures, firing a four-under 68. Jeremy Kirk and Jordan Potter, who are 11 strokes back, were the only other golfers to hit level par on the day in the championship flight. Nicholas Pavletic and Ashley Nate had 72s playing in the third flight.

Sobey, who won the Amateur in 2018 and 2019, has a two-day 134 total, going 66-68 in the first two rounds of the event.

Jackson was three-over 75 on Sunday , while Lepore, who started the day one back of Sobey, had a four-over 76, both golfers sitting at even par 143 for the tournament.

Matthew Cho-Chu is fourth, with a 144 total.
